I used to be among them until I realized exactly that in which you wrote on the subject. You just happened to use better wording than I would've. By the way, the blog Marginalia is a wonderful example of the type of writing in which one can find plenty of passages to highlight!

I suspect it survives because we confuse respecting the object with respecting the ideas, when marking a page is often the higher form of respect: proof that something landed. Happy the essay gave you the wording. And I'll take the Marginalia recommendation; a blog built to be highlighted is exactly the kind of writing the chain needs.
